The Osborne 1 was released in April 1981 by the Osborne Computer Corporation, and is considered as the first commercially successful portable microcomputer.
The computer weighed 10.7 kg and was priced at $1795. It ran on the CP/M 2.2 operating system. The Osborne 1 had a 13-centimetre (5-inch) display.
In 1982 Kaypro Corporation launched the Kaycomp I, which was only a demonstration model for prospective buyers. Kaypro released the Kaypro II, soon after a competitor to the Osborne 1.
The Compaq portable was announced in November 1982 and was the first IBM PC compatible portable computer.
The first full-colour portable computer, the Commodore SX-64, was launched in January 1984.
Tech giant Apple's first venture in the world of portable computing was in April 1984 when it launched the Apple IIc. The 'c' in the name stood for 'compact.'
Portable computers found widespeaad acceptance in the form of laptop or notebook computers. But some definitions describe laptops as different from portable computers and put them into a separate category.
